Our Philosophy– Knowledge, Nature, and Wellness are at the roots of everything we do. We believe education continues outside the classroom, so we empower children to explore the world through their own lenses. Our environment in and around 40 Tioga Way is optimized to invite and inspire the natural flow of discovery, creativity, and play. Through these channels, children become resourceful problem solvers, and organically develop social and emotional wellness.
Schedule– After School Club at Island Roots begins at the end of the school day, extending academic and social opportunities until 6:00pm. Classes, or Clubs, are built into each afternoon without any extra sign-ups or payments. Our center is also open for Discovery Days during vacation weeks and days off from school, because we know that they're some of the best times for natural learning and self-directed exploration. For specific program dates, visit our calendar.
Transportation– Fully included in program tuition, students who attend schools within Marblehead will be picked up at school dismissal each day by Island Roots Instructors, and transported to Island Roots by professional drivers accredited for student transport. Students attending from outside of Marblehead are also welcome in our After School Club, but guardians must arrange transportation separately. Upon request (and with permission) we will share applicable carpooling information.
Knowledge, Nature, and Wellness are at the roots of everything we do.
Discovery Days and Vacation Discovery Weeks are the best choice for informed families who want professional education to continue while school is out. Our program is led by licensed educators with traditional, experiential, and outdoor education experience.
Our tuition reflects the quality of a program trusted by parents and educators, tailored to fit the needs and schedule of your family. Transportation, half days, and Clubs are fully integrated into our tuition - you'll never be surprised by unnecessary fees.
We've chosen to represent prices as a yearly tuition (see below for tuition plans) so that you see exactly what you pay, but it's based on a rate of twenty dollars per hour. That's about what you would pay a babysitter, and comparable to (even competitive with) other programs in the area when compared to their pricing after hidden fees, extra class costs, and membership dues.
All families enrolling more than one child will receive a 5% sibling discount applied to total tuition.
Enrollments after the start of the 2021-2022 Academic Year will be prorated by week to reflect start date.
Families may choose from the following tuition plan options:
One-time payment upon enrollment. Club days or Discovery Days/Weeks added after payment will also be paid upon enrollment.
Monthly payments made over 10 months from September-June. Club Days or Discovery Days/Weeks added after initial payment will be added to remaining balance.
We provide transportation from Marblehead’s public elementary schools from school dismissal to Island Roots on Tioga Way. We are also happy to help connect families who are interested in carpooling from other locations.
We consider the first two weeks of school an opportunity for us to orient participants into our program, get to know them, and provide an overview of the options available. Transitions can be challenging for everyone, and allowing this time is important for the development and comfort of Island Roots participants.

As we get to know participants and their skills and interests, we establish Clubs based on who is in our program on which days. That way, we can be sure the Clubs meet the interests of participants. Clubs are like classes and can range from Hiking Club to Nature Club to Art Club to Music Club and many many more options depending on participants. Once those start our schedule looks much like above with Clubs from 3:45-4:30 and 4:30-5:15.
We cap our program intentionally at 30 participants/day. Once enrollment goes over 10 on a given day, we assign groups, based on age/grade, so we have a maximum of 3 groups of 10 participants per day.
Supervised by EEC- and DESE-licensed educators, our staff range from high school to college students to professional adults and people who may have already retired from their careers.
We have a large flexible learning space and smaller rooms around the edge of our Activity Room, so each group will have space designated for snacks/creative play/discovery time, then Clubs include participants from any of the groups.
To increase indoor air health, suite 150 also includes two HVAC systems which continually circulate air, four portable, automatically adjusting air purifiers in our large activity room, and a variety of natural, indoor plants. For participant safety, designated cubbies allow a home for personal items while here. And to further promote health and comfort, we encourage families to provide non-slip, slip- or slide-on shoes or slippers that can remain at Island Roots for indoor use. This practice also promotes a mindful transition into suite 150 from outside.
Weather permitting, we use our backyard for snacks/meals, backyard games and activities, and even crafts and board games from time to time. Steer Swamp Conservation Area (just steps away) allows us increased natural space to enjoy and explore while practicing the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace.
